As Finland will be the patron of the upcoming Nordischer Klang 2021, we announced a poster competition in cooperation with the Finnish Institute in mid-August last year to find a poster design for the 30th anniversary. The competition was open to young artists from the fields of graphic design, visual art and illustration from Finland who are currently studying or have recently completed their studies. A total of 37 poster designs from 35 young Finnish artists were received by the closing date on 15.11.2020. Among others, the universities in Helsinki, Jakobstad, Kouvola and Lahti were involved, which had made the Greifswald design competition part of their classes.

The nine-member jury consisting of the festival management and organisation, art experts from the Caspar David-Friedrich-Institute at the University of Greifswald and representatives of the Finnish Institute in Germany decided that the poster design showing an animal-musical trio was the winner. The poster was designed and created by the 24-year-old graphic design student Taru Rantanen from the Lahti University of Applied Sciences. The young artist focuses on comics and caricatures. In addition to her studies, she also works as a tattoo artist. As a prize, she will receive a trip to the opening weekend of Nordischer Klang this year together with a companion, donated by the Finnish Institute in Germany.

In this context, we had a digital interview with Taru Rantanen in December 2020, in which she gives us a little insight into the creation of the poster design.

What are your associations when you look at the poster image? Taru Rantanen told us what atmosphere she wants to create with her design and what feelings she wants to awaken in the viewers.
